Smoking: Keeping vs. Quitting the Habit
If you were a non-smoker, you would probably have a hard time to fully comprehend why smokers chose to spend their hard earned money on cigarettes, which, as we all know, slowly kills us. To some, smoking may just be a part of their daily habit just like taking a bath is part of one’s routine—lighting up a cigarette when having a cup of coffee or a glass of beer, while reading the daily newspaper or preparing for a meeting, fixing the room, moving their bowels, waiting for a friend, killing the time and so on.
The end point is, we are all concerned on how to let these people quit smoking without even trying to understand why they decided to smoke in the first place. For sure, they have their own unique, valid set of reasons for keeping the habit. Well, here are some of their reasons:
1. It is legal and it is not prohibited. Nobody has ever been arrested for smoking. It is widely available and there seems to be no signs of scarcity of supplies.2. The experience of lighting up a cigarette is very rewarding and pleasant. Not a soul has ever complained of having pain while smoking. Besides, there will be no smokers if it is a painful thing to do.
3. You look cool when you smoke. My favorite actors and actresses all looked cool with a cigarette in their hand plus commercials, magazine ads and other forms of advertising are also depicting smoking as a means of glamour.
4. Smoking is my way of socializing with people. My friends smoke and they appear to be chic, calm, confident and in control. I feel accepted in a group.
5. This is my body, so I have the right to do whatever I want.
6. Smoking suppresses any unwanted feelings and emotions such as sadness and grief. It helps me cope up with stress, issues of low self-esteem, anger and anxiety. It accompanies me when I feel bored and lonely.
There are a lot more of reasons that are still not made known. However, nothing changes the fact that learning how to smoke is something you are not born with but rather, something you have learned how to do. Smoking is a personal choice so it is in your hands if you finally decide to kick that habit. There are individual reasons for smoking and so does quitting but whatever your reason may be, either for yourself or for others, the important thing is; you have the motivation to succeed in your mission to cease smoking. Here are a few reasons why you should start to do so:
1. You can save a great deal of money. Just think of how much groceries or shopping bags you can have in replacement with the amount you spend on your cigarettes.2. You will look good because you smell good and have pearly white teeth.
3. You will age gracefully and enjoy a longer lifespan. Smokers have wrinkles ten times more than non-smokers.
4. You will be able to protect your family and friends, especially the kids from being second-hand smokers.
5. You will reduce your chances of developing certain types of diseases associated with smoking such as heart attack, stroke, cancer (lung, throat, mouth, and nose) and erectile dysfunction.
6. You will be a good role model to your children.
7. Your circulation will improve and you will experience lesser episodes of headaches. More oxygen can reach your brain and will therefore, increase your brainpower.
8. You will have more energy and stamina to fight stress and feel more relaxed. Walking, running and swimming will be a lot easier to do.
9. You will have an improved sense of smell and your food will taste better.
10. With every pack of cigarette a day, smokers averagely lose two teeth in every decade.
11. Smokers are most likely to pass away six and a half years earlier than those who do not smoke. Fifty percent of all smokers typically lose 10 years of their life as a consequence to their habit.
12. Gone are the days wherein smoking was socially accepted. Smoking is now prohibited in several public areas and work places. The community has been more aware of its ill effects to health and is looking forward to a smoke-free environment for all.
One of the hardest decision smokers have to face is quitting the habit. Not everybody is victorious during the first attempt to quit smoking. However, reality is, ex-smokers made several efforts before finally overcoming their habit. How one quits may totally differ with how the other one does. So, keep on trying!
